Backpackers here generally avoid drinking unfiltered water so as not to shit their brains out as a result of consuming giardia parasites. I’ve always cleaned my water using iodine tablets.

W e definitely have G iardia in the US. When we lived in upstate NY, people called it “beaver fever” because it would grow in beaver dams . It was tempting to drink water directly from t he clear-looking streams that flowed down the mountains, but boiling was highly recommended.

I knew people who learned their lesson and suffered severe diarrhea, miles from civilization.
